WordPress is free software that makes it easy (at least easier) to create and manage blogs and websites.
WordPress is one of the most popular tools available for this purpose. It is used by more than 16% of the top million most-visited websites and by 22% of all newly created websites.
WordPress is available in two versions. The simple, though limited, version is the WordPress-hosted version. It allows you to create and host a blog or website through WordPress.com. It’s very easy to use but is limited in design and other options.
The more popular approach to using WordPress is to download the free open source software and create a WordPress blog (or website) that is hosted with your own web host. This approach allows you nearly infinite freedom to customize as much as you like while still using a very easy-to-use content management system.
Blog vs. Site – Though WordPress is technically a “blogging platform,” its features and ability to fully customize themes have made it a great website development tool as well. While you can use it as a simple blog, you can also add pages and create a full-featured website.
Dashboard – Once your blog is set up, your WordPress dashboard will be the first thing you see when you log in to the administrative backend of the system. From here, you can easily add or edit your posts, add or edit pages, moderate comments, change settings or add plug-ins. You will also see how many posts, pages, categories, tags, and comments your blog has in one view.
Themes – One of the most popular things about WordPress are its’ customizable themes. You can use one of the basic themes that come with the software or you can download or buy a custom-made theme. You can even create your own. You can also edit the themes after you have downloaded them for even more customization.
Plug-Ins – Over 18,000 plug-ins have been created for WordPress. Some popular plug-ins help you with your SEO; allow you to post your content to your social media pages; and make it easy for you to create shopping carts and contact forms on your site. You can easily install most plug-ins through the plug-ins page on the WordPress dashboard.
Widgets – Widgets are add-ons to your site. WordPress offers basic ones like news feeds, time and weather, slideshows, etc. You can also get WordPress widgets from third-party developers. Like plug-ins, there is no end to what you can do with widgets.
WordPress is a popular platform because it is easy to use but also allows blogs and websites to be totally customized. Not to mention the software is free!
Do you use WordPress? Why? Why not?
