June 10, 2021 — Diagnostic and Interventional Cardiology (DAIC) magazine has won a prestigious Jesse H. Neal Award for its COVID-19 coverage during 2020. DAIC won the award for Best Technical/Scientific Content for its entry "delivering Detailed Medical Information to Clinicians During COVID-19."
The Software and Information Industry Association (SIIA) announced the winners for the 67th Jesse H. Neal Awards June 9. The Neals are the most prestigious editorial honors in the field of business-to-business journalism (B2B), and are often referred to as the Pulitzer Prize of B2B journalism.
"The standards of care in cardiology were developed over decades, but in 2020, cardiology quickly became involved in the COVID-19 pandemic because it causes numerous cardiovascular issues," explained DAIC Editor Dave Fornell. "Cardiologists had to learn about the new disease and how to treat it very rapidly, and there has been a scramble to get up-to-date accurate technical information."
DAIC delivers coverage on new technology and trends in cardiology, but with COVID-19, a sizable about of its coverage converted to clinical aspects relevant to DAIC's cardiology audience. In 2020, DAIC produced more than 160 pieces of COVID-related content, including 30 physician video interviews on specific aspects of COVID. By watching analytics on news posts, Fornell identified several key topics where cardiologists wanted to take a deeper technical dive.
One of the new COVID-related cardiovascular diseases to emerge was multi-system inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C). Analytics were very high for news items on this, so Fornell wrote an article designed to distill all the information known at the time, link to the original studies and break down the discussion of how to diagnose, treat and manage these patients. That article became the most read article ever posted the DAIC, with more than 215,000 pageviews to date. The article was updated several times and still receives 100-300 pageviews per day a year after it was written. The article has an an incredible average time on page of 23.04 minutes.
The award nomination submission also included an overview article on the cardiac impacts of COVID with more than 37,000 pageviews, and how extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support plays a critical role in keeping some of the sickest COVID patients alive. DAIC's COVID-ECMO coverage has had more than 42,000 pageviews, included the below video overview interview.
